Dictionary Update: Manspreading

In the “Dictionary Update” series, I will share with you (new) terminologies that are used in society and academics, mostly in the context of equity, women’s’ issues and inclusion.

Manspreading combines two words “man” and “spreading”. It describes the practice whereby a man adopts a sitting position with his legs wide apart, in such a way as to encroach on an adjacent seat. It is a behaviour that is commonly spotted on public transport.
