Manspreading combines two words “man” and “spreading”. It describes the practice whereby a man adopts a sitting position with his legs wide apart, in such a way as to encroach on an adjacent seat. It is a behaviour that is commonly spotted on public transport.

You must be referring to heavily crowded trains. However, it does happen in bus all the time…. where you have two seaters on either side of the bus. Also happens often in waiting rooms of hospitals, schools, offices!

Also, a woman spreading her legs has sexual connotations and overtones. So, in addition to occupancy of a public space, this is also why perhaps women don’t spread their legs.
